Dear Andy
Please accept my resignation from the Police Association due to my retirement as of September 5, 2001.
I have been placed in the position of retiring early as the result of invalidity.
I would especially like to thank Sgt Bruce Hartley (Adelaide Traffic), Sgt Kym Fisher (South Coast Traffic) and Ian Hutchinson (Rehab Section) and many other members who have supported and helped me over the past two-and-a-half years during a difficult period.
I wish the remaining members of course 42 (there are a few left) and all other members who I have served with over the past 28 years, all the very best for the future.
I leave the job with fond memories of good times but believe the job has changed and it is not getting any easier out there.
To conclude, I say: If youre not living on the edge, youre wasting space.
Regards
Kevin Spokes Elliott

Dear Andy
Please accept my resignation from the Police Association due to my retirement. My last day of service is September 7, 2001.
Many changes have occurred during my 40 years with SAPOL, but one constant factor throughout that time has been the dedication and willingness of the Police Association to assist its members. The subscriptions we pay are minimal for the services and the work required to protect the rights of the employee.
I leave with fond memories of my work colleagues and postings at city patrols, Whyalla, Andamooka, Coober Pedy, Woomera, Adelaide and Renmark CIB, Para Hills, Oodnadatta, Port Lincoln and Nuriootpa.
Best of luck in the future.
Yours faithfully
Dave Gerhardy

Dear Andy
Please accept my resignation from the Police Association due to my retirement effective September 13, 2001.
I have taken up a position within the Courts Administration Authority as a Sheriffs officer. I thank you and your staff for your tremendous support over the years. To SAPOL, I say an extra special thank you.
There were a few lows in my career spanning 35-and-a-half years. However, the outrageously good times I had far overshadowed the bad. I have no regrets. Its a great job and I take with me many great memories.
To my many friends, I say thank you, take care and look forward to seeing you soon.

Dear Andy
I wish to advise my resignation from the Police Association of SA due to my resignation from SAPOL, my last shift being October 3, 2001.
My wife, Evelyn, and I are moving to Sydney, NSW, where I have accepted a position as an investigator with the NSW government.
I have thoroughly enjoyed my short but varied career with the South Australia Police. Best regards to the people I have worked with at Unley patrols, Speed Detection and RBT Section (thank you, Terry, for your support) Vice and Gaming Task Force, Southern Command Response Division, South Coast CIB, and Anti-Corruption Branch.
I have mixed emotions with this decision to leave. I have had the pleasure of working with fantastic people in the last 11 years, and made many loyal friends. I am going to miss their company but am only a phone call away and open an invitation to visit and stay with Evelyn and me if they are ever in Sydney. My move to NSW is very exciting, and it pleases me to be taking Evelyn home to her family. We will be moving into our apartment on Manly Beach and living there for the summer, then hope to buy a second place at Balmain and move again.
I have received tremendous support from my peers and supervisors over the years in progressing my career, and thank them sincerely. There are many, but I wish to acknowledge a few: Matthew Buck and Steve Whetton - my first senior partners on the road; Mark Carroll, who gave me an opportunity to spread my wings at the Vice and Gaming Task Force; Paul Miller, who is one of the very best supervisors I have had the fortune to work with; Paul Lewandowski and Kent McFarlane, who believed in me and supported me as a detective at Christies Beach and supported my career moves; Mat Bengel, Keith Parry-Jones, Rick Perry and Mick Symons, who gave me tremendous support and opportunities in developing my career at the Anti-Corruption Branch. There are many others, and I thank you all.
I have had a lot of fun along the way, and know what it is to work within close-knit teams of professional, dedicated and motivated people. The people of SAPOL are its best resource, and I think it goes understated too often.
I want to acknowledge the ongoing efforts of the Police Association of SA, which has made tremendous gains to improve conditions for SAPOLs best resource.
As a parting word, I encourage all members to always do their very best to develop and progress themselves. Aim for the top - your horizon is only as high as you lift your eyes.
All the best to the members of courses 42, 43 and 44 of 1990-91, and to the members of the 1997 CIB course and the 2000 designation course.
And, finally, to the men and women in uniform on the road. Yours is the most important and difficult job within SAPOL. Be professional, do your best, and continue to be the very best in Australia.
Yours sincerely
Rob Paterson

Dear Andy
Please accept my resignation from the Police Association due to my retirement, my last day of service being October 10, 2001. My thanks to the Police Association for all its assistance and tireless effort.
I have nothing but praise and admiration for all those I have worked with over the last 37 years (on patrols, Traffic and Water Police). The many character lines (wrinkles) on my face are the consequence of two things. Firstly, a result of the elements of nature (having worked outside for the majority of my career) and, secondly, the endless laughter created by the never-ending stream of comedians who have surrounded me over the years. What a small price to pay for such precious rewards. The humour of the younger generation is a bit high tech for me these days, with about 85 per cent going over my head, yet I still laugh along, trying to appear with it.
Without taking anything away from any person or area within the job, my admiration and respect goes out to the uniform patrol members. Their job is dangerous (due to the unknown), complicated (by rules, regulations and policies) and involves much conflict (enjoyed by none). Throw in the pressure (endless taskings and paperwork) and you end up with a special sort of a person who can still smile at the end of the day, without becoming bitter and twisted.
I often read that a coppers job is a thankless one, but I dont believe it. The protection and assistance each and every one of you contribute (in whatever field) allows good people to enjoy peace and safety (which is taken for granted until threatened, as we have seen in recent events involving terrorists in the USA). Believe me, our public out there love you so keep looking after them.
I thank Bob McDonald and Rob Badenoch for their assistance, guidance and tolerance during the last few years. They, plus each and every member of WOU have paved the way ahead of, and erased the bloopers behind, me each day. Thanks, guys.
Ill probably spend the next 44 years (Im going for the century) thinking what else I should have included.
Its been great. Id do it all again. Ill miss the company. Hoping paths cross.
Yours sincerely

Dear Andy
I am writing to advise you of my resignation from SAPOL and the Police Association. My last day of service is October 21, 2001.
I leave having spent 14 years in SAPOL. I have worked in various areas such as traffic, patrols, intelligence and prosecution. I have some great memories and have thoroughly enjoyed my time in SAPOL.
I have accepted a job with the Nurses Board of South Australia. The position will incorporate both my police career and the nursing career I had prior to joining SAPOL.
I thank all those members who I have had the privilege of working with. I believe I am leaving with no enemies and will no doubt miss the camaraderie that goes with the job.
I especially wish all the members of the Criminal Justice Sections (Prosecution) the best for the future. Prosecution is no doubt the area in my career that has demanded the most of me. I truly hope that the Police Association and SAPOL are able to address the concerns raised in the meeting held earlier in the year. No doubt you all deserve better pay for what you do and the hours you work and more staff.
Yours sincerely
John Hermann
