SA POLICE MOTORCYCLE CLUB

by Jim Andrew, President

Coorong Campaway

The annual Coorong weekend again proved to be an excellent weekend of riding last May. Club members - with their dirt bikes and camping gear - enjoyed what is arguably the best sand-riding area in SA.

Greg Trickett, Matt Roy and others got serious this year, putting big paddle tyres on the back of the bikes for extra traction in the deep sand. After they arrived on a Saturday morning, most explored this private property’s wide, open spaces. Dave and Tristan Paxon attend with both the Suzuki and new Polaris 500cc quad. Dave seemed to rediscover his youth with his newly acquired “beast”. He kept up with the solos through the huge sand hills.

Members will visit the property again in a few months.

Thumper Nats

Round two of the National Thumper (four-stroke) Nationals was held at Boulder Park via Mannum on June 17. Several members attended the event and watched Australia’s best ride around a track regarded as the finest in the country.

Kiwi Daryl King showed why he has been placing well over recent years on the World 500cc motocross scene. The local Metcalfe boys did us proud, but at the end of the day could not keep up with King and the other top Australian riders.

This event is set down for another few years at Mannum.

Coonalpyn Campaway

One of the best weekends of riding for club members comes in the second last weekend of August. The Coonalpyn property has it all: great sleeping facilities and the best tracks for novices, the experienced and kids.

Ken Naismith, his family and many other members attended this year. Club treasurer, Bernadette Reilly, tried out her Yamaha quad, while Steve Taylor brought his brand new KTM 400, which sustained a flat rear tyre.

The self-made enduro track at the back of the property proved to be a challenge for riders and the weekend was a success.

Several members re-attended the Coonalpyn property for a day’s ride on September 9. In minor mishaps, Greg Trickett came to grief on his KTM520 and suffered bruising, while I slipped down a mudded section and hit a tree on my XR650. Nonetheless, we carried on, following property owner, Dave Heinrich, through some thick wooded sections.

State Enduro round

The round of the State Enduro Series set to be hosted by the club on September 16 has been cancelled. The cancellation resulted from too few entries and other events scheduled around the same date.
