Enterprise Bargain III - the ballot
By the time members read this issue of the Police Journal, most would have cast their vote, but the result will still be unknown. Under the Industrial and Employee Relations Act, an agreement can only be reached when the majority of those it covers agree to be bound by it.
In this process, as in all democratic processes, the majority prevails. As no individual - or group of individuals - can determine the outcome, this is a fair and democratic system.
Negotiations have taken place and an offer has been made, but its acceptance or rejection is a matter for the membership.
The offer received from the government follows extensive negotiations between the Police Association and the Commissioner for Public Employment. Association delegates endorsed the offer for a membership vote on July 24, 2001.
The details of the offer have been circulated to all members, and association officials have attended workplaces when requested to provide further explanation.
The jury is now out on this part of the process and we await the outcome.
