The Last Shift

Dear Peter

Please accept my resignation from the Police Association effective as of May 21, 2000, this being my last day of service with SAPOL. I am pleased to announce that I am moving on to “greener pastures” and taking up employment with the SA Ambulance Service.

To all those with whom I have had the pleasure of working, I thank you and wish you all the very best. Special mention goes to the members of course 56 and the past and present members of the Adelaide LSA (particularly team 1), which made my time with SAPOL both rewarding and memorable.

Yours sincerely
Jodie Lamont-Doecke
Constable 8389/2
Adelaide LSA

Dear Andy

Please accept my resignation from the Police Association due to my resignation from SAPOL effective May 21, 2001.

Although I am leaving SAPOL, I am not leaving the policing profession. I have returned to my home state of Victoria to join Victoria Police.

I am thankful for my short time within SAPOL and wish everyone in course 25 of 2000 all the best for their futures. I also thank Senior Constable Gus Sickerdick for his wonderful work with course 25 at the police academy.

If anyone is ever in Melbourne be sure to contact me.

Darcy McEwan
Probationary Constable 4985/6
Holden Hill Patrols

Dear Andy

Please accept this letter of resignation from the Police Association. My last day of service with SAPOL being July 4, 2001, as I will be commencing employment with Transport SA as chief inspector operations.

After 14 years’ service with SAPOL, I leave with some reservations but also excitement with the new challenges that lay ahead.

I have not taken this step lightly. I felt that I had been whingeing and whining long enough and thought it was time I did something about it.

Thank you to the Police Association for its assistance during my time of need and for the efforts put in by all the staff during the EB negotiations to obtain the conditions that we now enjoy. Keep up the good work.

There is not much more I can say that hasn’t already been stated by the departing members already.

I thank those who I have worked with over the last 14 years and wish the remaining members of course 147 (doing time) all the best with their futures.

Good luck
David (Buck) Rogers
Senior Constable 2940/9
Transit Services Branch

Dear Andy

Please accept my resignation from the Police Association due to my resignation from SAPOL effective July 4, 2001.

Yours sincerely

Dear Andy

I wish to resign from the Police Association as I have resigned from SAPOL, my last day of service being July 4, 2001 (which, ironically, is American Independence Day). I have long wanted to take up full-time tertiary studies and, after a few frustrating years, the combination of finances and opportunity has finally come.

I have been an avid reader of resignation letters in the Police Journal as this appears to be the only forum where former members can freely express their frustration and disillusionment with “the job”. I won’t repeat what others have said. As one correspondent stated in his letter some time ago, the managers who the comments are directed to are the ones who do not take any notice. Plus, the head-in-the-sand management style so apparent in SAPOL is also endemic in other government departments as well as private enterprise. The knowledge and skills which we work so hard to obtain are becoming increasingly irrelevant in a working world where the bottom line on a profit-loss sheet is the only justification for human existence on this planet.

For those members who are genuinely happy in SAPOL, you are fortunate in achieving that satisfaction - there are many who are envious of you. For those who are not happy but are unable to leave - never give up looking at other options. One day the right opportunity will come and you don’t want to miss it.

To some members, leaving the job security of SAPOL seems too much of a risk. However, the perception of risks is relative - there are many civilians out there who think that being a police officer is too risky, too much of a gamble and no way are they going to leave their safe jobs to join up.

All members must support the Police Association - Andy Dunn and his team are the only ones who go in batting for you. Management certainly does not support you, nor does the Government or most of the public. Without the Police Association, you are well and truly on your own. Think about it.

Regards
Mike Somerset

Dear Peter

I hereby tender my resignation from the Police Association due to my separation from SAPOL, with my last day of service being July 6, 2001.

I thank past and present OCs of PALSA, Snr Sgt T Rowbottom (formerly OC of PALSA CJS) and Snr Sgt J Bruhn (academy ’87-’88). Best wishes to all at PALSA, all police prosecutors and members of ’87-’88 course 20. Keep up the good work - I’m proud to have been associated with you.

Kind regards
EM Leray
Senior Constable 5329/9
PALSA CJS

Dear Andy

Please accept my resignation from the Police Association effective on July 6, 2001, this being my last day of service with SAPOL.

Regards
Gary O’Donnell
Senior Constable 3480/7
Adelaide LSA CJS

Dear Secretary

Please accept my resignation from the Police Association effective July 13, 2001, which is the date of my retirement from SAPOL.

I have enjoyed my time in the job and leave with 34-and-a-half years’ worth of stories to bore my friends. I am grateful to the association for the fact that police officers can retire after age 50 as this has enabled me to roll over my lump sum and accept a position with Transport SA.

To those who remain, all the best for the future and good luck with the next EB agreement.

Phil Brophy
Sergeant 254/9
Traffic Operations Unit

Dear Peter and Andy

I herein tender my resignation from the Police Association of South Australia effective Sunday, July 15, 2001, being my last day of service with SAPOL.

Reading the myriad of resignation letters in The Last Shift over the last 11 years, I pondered to myself what I would write when the situation arose. I have read numerous before me criticizing SAPOL and its members. I could never bring myself to do this as I have little criticism. What there is, is of such insignificance that it is not worthy of mention.

I have enjoyed almost every component of my career, and I do believe that it has been a career. I was one of 28 selected and became a member of course 39 of 1990, graduating on Wednesday, May 8, 1991.

Since May 1991, I have had the somewhat honour of having worked with a number of wonderful and professional people at Berri, Southern Command Response Division, Hindley St, Norwood and Adelaide Investigation. My time in these places has provided me with, or exposed me to, almost every possible attitude, emotion and challenge imaginable within and outside the organization.

There are so many workmates that I want to acknowledge in helping to make my career so enjoyable, but I won’t, as I thank you all.

It has been great and my future is bountiful.

Regards
Jonathan Jackson
Ex-SAPOL 3048/7

Dear Peter and Andy

Please accept my resignation from the Police Association effective July 25, 2001, due to my retirement from SAPOL.

From the age of nine, all I ever wanted to do was to be a policewoman. I achieved that and had the best life doing it.

I thank all the many workmates over the last 37-and-a-half years for their support, friendship and fun and, for those still around, I wish them all the very best for their future.

You read all the gripes, groans and ranting from others leaving the job, but I can only say that it is still the best job, where you make the best friends and have the best fun, and there is nothing with my life that I would change.

I thank the Police Association for all it has done in relation to our pay and conditions and wish it good luck with our next EB.

Goodbye and good luck
Trish Walkley
Senior Constable 1329/3

Dear Sir

Please accept my resignation from the Police Association, as my last day of service is July 27, 2001.

I am leaving SAPOL to stay at home and care for my three beautiful children, and hopefully to have a couple more.

I thank all those I have had the pleasure of working with over the past 14 years. Thanks for the friendships made and the fun times shared at B1, Bank St, Mount Gambier, Comms and back at Mount Gambier again.

I wish all members good health and good luck for the future. Keep smiling and doing what we do best.

Regards
Lee Lillyman
Constable, 5290/0
Mount Gambier

I hereby tender my resignation from the Police Association due to my resignation from SAPOL. Good luck to all persons in SAPOL.
