Annual Carnival - St John's Park, Sydney

(part III)

At the 43rd Australian Police Bowling Association Carnival - held at St John’s Park Bowling Club in April this year - all but one of the SAPBC contenders in the pairs competition were knocked out of the main competition leading up to the semi-finals.

The rink of Bryan Dowling and Graham Boyer managed to get through to the semi-final, but then met a determined New South Wales combination in Ross “Rosco” Smith and Garry Marriage. “Rosco” won that encounter (22 shots to 13) and then beat Victoria’s team of Bert Rutherford and Paul Hickman in the final.

The SAPBC’s combination of Neil Marriott and Keith Jones put up a brave fight to eliminate their seasoned opposition as they fought their way through three rounds to reach the final of the Pairs Plate competition. Unfortunately, their good form deserted them and they lost to the Victorian combination Gerry Hoy and Don Symons (25 to 3).

Four rinks - skippered by Ian Young, Ron Allen, Karen Granfield and Peter Jalfon - represented the SA side in the triples competition. None of the SA side was able to progress beyond the first round, unlike last year’s effort when one rink played off in the semi-finals.

The “fours” competition was almost a repeat of last year’s result as far as the SA side was concerned. The SA challenge for the “fours” trophy faltered at the semi-final stage, and a four skippered by Lindsay Yeo won the Fours Plate trophy.

One of the SA team’s fours skippered by John McKnight (leader, Tim Dodds; second, Errol O’Leary; and third, Peter Baehnk) was firing on all cylinders as it progressed through the first round of the “Fours” competition and then met the New South Wales four of John O’Connell in the second.

They won both games convincingly and then met the Victoria four of Ian Miles in the semi-final. Ian Miles progressed through to the final after a well-deserved win against John McKnight’s four (21 to 17). They were also too good for their finals opponents, a Queensland four skippered by Brian Chapman, and won the trophy 26 shots to 13.

The fours of Ivan Doering and Lindsay Yeo took part in the Fours Plate competition after a first round loss. Both fours played in the semi-final round of that competition, but only Lindsay Yeo’s rink (leader, Trevor Gregory; second, Ian Matters; and third, John Minagall) won through to the final against a Queensland four skippered by Michael Boylan.

The SA boys combined well. Their opposition was unable to “get started”, and Lindsay’s rink eventually repeated last year’s effort in taking out the trophy by 13 shots (22 to 9)

CORRECTION: An error was made in the Police Journal (June 2001) report of the results of the Club’s singles competition, which was decided before the March 18 closing day at the Elizabeth Bowling Club. Although it was correctly reported that Danny Dahlitz and Cos Cavaiuolo fought a close game, it was in fact Cavaiuolo who won and Dahlitz who lost. Peter Baehnk apologizes to these members.
