PASA President Awarded the Australian Police Medal

By Mark Burgess, CEO, Police Federation of Australia

Police Association of South Australia (PASA) president, Peter Alexander, was awarded the Australian Police Medal in the June Queen’s Birthday honours list.

Alexander - who is also national president of the Police Federation of Australia - received the medal for his distinguished police service and his contribution to the police union movement in Australia.

Alexander joined the South Australia police in 1967, having previously been a fireman. He was awarded the National Medal in 1982 and the Clasp to the National Medal in 1992. His current rank is detective sergeant.

During his police service he worked in Uniform Patrols from 1967 to 1970, when he transferred to the Metropolitan CIB. In 1975 he transferred to CIB Squads, working in Drugs from 1975 to 1979, Major Crime from 1979 to 1991, and then Organized Crime. It was from this posting in 1991 that he was seconded to perform the role of the first full-time president of PASA.

Alexander is a nationally-recognized police union official. He was first elected to PASA in 1985. In 1987 he was elected to the committee of management and in 1998 became vice president. In 1991 he was elected PASA president and still holds that position today.

Alexander is also the elected president of the Police Federation of Australia (PFA), the national body representing over 42,000 police. He was elected to this position in 1998 as its inaugural president and has been re-elected unopposed each year since. He had previously been president of the Police Federation of Australia and New Zealand in 1995.

Alexander’s interests outside policing include being a League director of the South Adelaide Football Club.

Alexander has had close to a 30-year policing career. Not only is he a recognized professional police investigator, but his police union career has seen him attain the highest police union honour in the country, as the elected president of the Police Federation of Australia.

Alexander is married to wife Joan and has four grown-up children.

Police across Australia have congratulated Peter Alexander on having attained this recent honour of being awarded the Australian Police Medal.
