Geranium Campaway
About a dozen enthusiastic members travelled to the Geranium property for the clubs first dirt-riding event of the year in March. Most were eager to explore the propertys many and varied tracks. The camping area - with sheds, washing facilities and a shower - was excellent. Riders managed to negotiate all the large sandhill tracks in and around the area without incident.
Delamere Road Ride
The annual ride to Hindmarsh Island via Delamere was the clubs first road ride of the year in late March. Unfortunately, the weather turned nasty and was not compatible with road bikes. Nonetheless, eight members braved the elements on bikes, as a few more drove cars. With strong winds blowing through Delamere, riders had a very eventful time, but all eventually met on the island for the usual barbecue lunch.
Monarto Dirt Ride
Some of the clubs dirt-riding members visited the Monarto property - one of the best areas close to Adelaide - in April. The enduro tracks were rutted and very challenging in places. The area also has tracks through the wooded areas, a large sand track and areas nearby for kids riding. The owner continually upgrades the facilities, and the improvements are obvious every time riders visit.
Phillip Island World Superbikes
Eleven members made the annual trip to the World Superbike round at Phillip Island in April. Members met at Tailem Bend on the Thursday morning on eight bikes and in two cars. They travelled to Warrnambool via the great roads in Victoria, enjoying a fantastic journey along the Great Ocean Road.
The weather on Friday morning was reasonable but showed signs of worsening. After a stop at Mates Rest, members continued to Queenscliff for a 40-minute ferry ride to Sorrento. Then, after a one-and-a-half-hour ride, they arrived at Cowes on Phillip Island in the evening, when the weather turned for the worse.
A few members attended the track to watch the qualifying on Saturday morning. Troy Corser (Australia) got the Super Poll.
On Sunday morning (race day), the heavens opened up - literally. It rained the whole day and night. Walking around the track was like playing in mud; and there was hardly any shelter from the rain. The first race was run and won, but the rain made it hard to see much of the track. The second race of the supers was then cancelled due to dangerous conditions.
With equally heavy rain on Monday morning, about six members decided to ride straight through to Adelaide that day. The rest went through to Halls Gap, where they stayed on Monday night and relaxed for the Tuesday journey home.
Barossa trial-ride
Six members met at Salisbury for a trial ride through the Barossa on May 9. Mick Klose took members through Kapunda and the old 24-hour trials tracks. Unfortunately, the president bit the sand, damaged his pride and, five minutes later, scored a flat rear tyre! Riding was nonetheless good overall.
