Where do you go on a stunning autumn day in Adelaide for lunch? My partner and I had the desire for a long lunch with some old friends and thought of the seaside. We had heard many good things about the Grange Jetty Kiosk and took the plunge.
This restaurant is set right on the sand dunes next to the Grange Jetty. We were lucky to have a perfect autumn day to enjoy the lapping waves and brilliant blue water.
The menu has an interesting mix of Mediterranean and Asian influence - refried black bean with roast chilli salsa and tortilla chips is just one dish on offer. The entrée choices on our table were refreshingly different, and I was lucky enough to taste all of them.
I had the prawn and shitake tom yum soup, which was served in an overly large bowl. I couldn't finish it.
Other entrées to hit the table were balsamic squid with anchovy gremolata and duck, fennel, porcini and spring onion risotto. The risotto was great - and worthy of seconds.
We had a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc with these, and it was fantastic. There is no doubt that the New Zealanders produce some of the best Sauvignon Blanc. Keep this in mind when you next decide on one. You won't be disappointed.
As to be expected, fish 'n' chips are available along with the beef and chicken choices. I felt like veal shanks, as did my partner. They are presented on the menu as being served with polenta and quince. Having had some very tight stomach experiences after polenta consumption, we created our own dish - veal shanks with garlic mash. The staff was only too happy to take this suggestion to the chef, who offered his advice to moisten the dish better with a lamb reduction. The shanks were good.
Our friends chose rosemary-smoked salmon with garlic mash and tomato broth, and beef fillet with crusty potato and leak bread and mushroom ragout. They both thought these dishes were great. The rosemary-smoked salmon was a great dish for which I would love the recipe. It has an interesting complexity of flavours.
After a suitable break, dessert menus bobbed their heads up. My partner chose the banana and white chocolate soufflé with honey cream. Very spectacular and tasty, but you need to have a sweet tooth to finish it. With a good bottle of French dessert wine, the rest of us picked at a cheese platter while taking in the sights. Very civilized.
You can't beat the location and service at the Grange Jetty Kiosk.
