Staffing Levels an Ongoing Campaign

Despite the Police Associations staffing-level campaign - and the implementation of the Premiers Task Force - staffing levels remain a serious and continuing concern.

So what has happened in the last 12 months?

About 140 members have separated from SAPOL (by death, resignation or retirement), and about 250 new recruits have been brought into the system, resulting in a net gain of about 110 above natural attrition.

This is a significant improvement but follows a number of years in which recruitment against natural attrition was not maintained.

The recent re-introduction of a relieving pool by the Commissioner is also good news. Unfortunately, however, the Police Association continues to receive complaints from members at patrol bases and police stations, both in metro and country areas. The Yorke Peninsula and Mannum police districts are recent examples.

Further, the introduction of the local-service-area concept is hard to assess, given that the areas have never been fully staffed.

The Police Association will continue working to ensure appropriate staffing levels in the interests of both its members and the South Australian community.
