Annual Carnival
The South Australian Police Bowling Club created history when it included a woman in a team it sent to Sydney for a national carnival last month. SAPOL employee Karen Granfield joined the SAPBC team with her husband, Wayne to compete in the 43rd Australian Police Bowling Association Carnival at St Johns Park Bowling Club.
The husband-and-wife team was a first for its state, the carnival and first-time host of the event, St Johns Park Bowling Club.
A crowd gathered for the carnivals official march-on opening on the morning of April 1. Teams from Queensland, SA, Victoria, WA and NSW entered to the accompaniment of the New South Wales Police Band.

Competition began just after 9am with Victoria playing WA, and SA playing Queensland. NSW was given a bye and rested until the following day.
Victoria and SA drew first blood and each side showed promise. SA defeated Queensland (125 shots to 86), while Victoria defeated WA (107 shots to 72). SA had run second to Victoria in the previous carnival.
The sides competition continued with SA facing off against NSW, and Queensland playing WA. The SA team was brought to Earth with a thud, going down by 44 shots to NSW (115/71). WA defeated Queensland (108 shots to 101).
SA was determined to rescue some pride in its next game the following day against Victoria, while NSW was scheduled to play Queensland. Despite SAs best efforts, it quickly became apparent that its race to seize the Sides Championship cup had derailed before it really began. Victoria won the game (109 shots to 75), and NSW won its game against Queensland (111 shots to 93).
A win against either Victoria or New South Wales was crucial in SAs quest to win the cup. In its final game (on April 5), SA managed to score a second win by defeating WA (107 shots to 88). Victoria narrowly beat NSW (93 shots to 89). It was now apparent that Victoria was on its way to another Sides Championship.
While SA had a bye on April 6, Victoria scored its fourth win in a game against Queensland (93 shots to 81), and NSW defeated WA (133 shots to 94).
The final table for the Sides Championship stood as:
Side Points Total Points Wins (for/against) Position Vic 4 402/317 4 1 NSW 3 448/351 3 2 SA 2 378/398 2 3 WA 1 362/448 1 4 Qld 0 361/437 0 5 SAs most successful rink was that of skipper John McKnight, who won three of the four games by substantial margins. His only loss was against the NSW rink of skipper John OConnell.
John McKnight retained his rink of Ron Allen (lead), Bryan Dowling (two) and Peter Baehnk (three) throughout the tournament, except in the game against NSW, in which Wayne Granfield replaced Ron Allen.
