Mens fours - Grange
Competitors from the SA Police and Grange Bowling Clubs gathered for their biannual challenge at the Grange Bowling Club in mid-February. With greens running well, players competed under lights in balmy conditions.
Without five full rinks, SAPBC numbers were bolstered by a couple of the ladies who had come to watch. Rex Kruger not originally nominated for the event polished his bowls and helped out.
SAPBC morale had obviously suffered, as the Grange Bowling Club was victorious in the end with a score of 85 to 80 shots. The rink of Allan Wallace (an SAPBC associate) obtained the best result for Grange with a 21-to-11 shot victory over the rink of Ivan Doering. Peter Baehnks rink got the best result for the SAPBC with a 22-to-10 shot margin over the Grange rink of Peter Roberts.

Lindsay Yeos rink lost (16 to 19 shots). Allan Martins rink won 15 to 11, while Graham Wakefields lost 16 to 24 shots. Wakefields score line was considerably improved when his rink (John Hancox, Brian Dowling and Doug Henning) scored an 8 on the second last end of its game.
Mens fours Modbury
Five SAPBC rinks visited the Modbury Bowling Club to challenge a composite 1 Red/1 White side to a game of 21 ends in February. The weather was hot and the greens were running well. The SAPBCs intent was to have as many of its carnival team players compete together.
Although the competition appeared to be a relaxed game played in an atmosphere of camaraderie, it proved highly competitive. The sole SAPBC winning rink belonged to Frank Holden, with a 21-to-16 shot margin over the Modbury rink of Terry Honor.
The rinks of John McKnight, Ivan Doering, Lindsay Yeo and Ron Allen were unsuccessful. Modbury won by 98 shots to 67.
New members
The SAPBC has accepted two full members, Colin Davies and Colin Miller. Davies plays at the Hahndorf Bowling Club, while Miller plays at Port Adelaide.
Mens fours Glenelg
The SAPBC played the Glenelg Bowling Club in an annual challenge at its (Glenelgs ground) in early March. Two of the SAPBCs newest members, Ian Timms and Colin Davies, made their first appearance for the club.

It was the SAPBCs turn to host the evening and five of its rinks were matched up against five of Glenelgs. The couch greens were a little slow and held. All of the SAPBC rinks started well but, with local knowledge, Glenelg came to within one shot of a win, losing 80 to 81 shots.
Allan Martins rink was the SAPBCs best, winning by four shots (17 to 13). Trevor Gregorys rink drew (12/12). The rinks of Graham Wakefield and Peter Baehnk each won by one shot (19/18 and 16/15), while Ivan Doerings rink lost by five shots (22/17). The sky was clear and starry, and the temperature remained at 20 degrees all night.
In this competitions 47-year history, the SAPBC has lost only once. The Glenelg Bowling Club very close to the Jetty Road shopping precinct was formed in 1905 and still has an active membership of 80 bowlers. One of its oldest members, 92-year-old Arnold Forbes, played, and is still going strong. He was joined on the green by 91-year-old Ron Gray, who still bowls up a storm.
