Police Super Update

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions about the Police Superannuation Scheme

Do you know?

You do not have to have been a member of the Police Superannuation Scheme for a period of 30 years to be eligible for a superannuation retirement benefit. You are entitled to a superannuation retirement benefit at any age from 50 onwards. The amount of superannuation benefit payable is based on your age and the number of years you have been a member of the Scheme at your retirement.

Contributions to the Police Superannuation Scheme are not payable in respect of a higher-duties allowance irrespective of how long you may have been in receipt of that allowance.

Contributions to the Police Superannuation Scheme are reviewed, once a year, on the basis of your superannuation salary as at 31 March. The reviewed contribution is payable from the first pay period in July following the review. If your superannuation salary changes after 31 March (promotion, pay rise), your contribution rate will not change until the next review as at 31 March the following year. Superannuation benefits are based on your superannuation salary payable at the date of separation (ie. promotion, pay rise is taken into account).

All applications for invalidity benefits are subject to independent medical assessment by the Police Superannuation Board’s medical panel.

If you are married and separated (not divorced) a spouse benefit is payable to your “legal spouse”.

You are covered for death, invalidity and temporary disability benefits 24 hours a day on or off duty. The benefit payable may be affected if you are entitled to workers compensation payments. Death benefits are payable to a legal spouse, a de facto spouse who qualifies under the provisions of the Police Superannuation Act or an eligible child. In the event of the death of a single member a lump sum superannuation benefit is payable to the member’s estate.

If you exhaust your sick leave entitlements and you are temporarily incapacitated for work you may make an application for a temporary disability pension, to the Police Superannuation Board, which can provide a fortnightly income for a period of up to 12 months.
