WINEMAKER’S BEER

by Mark Altmann

Jupiter Creek Wines distributes Australian brand beer as a supplement to its fine range of local wines.

One of its beers has its origins in the traditional wine region of the Coonawarra. From the terra rossa soils comes a sweet pale ale by the Lawrence Victor Estate.

Winemaker Philip Dohnt is the man behind this unlikely brew. It has already become fashionable in Sydney and Melbourne. Dohnt says the Coonawarra Pale Ale was specifically designed as a “cleanser” after tastings of the Coonawarra’s regional and famous red wines.

The beer consists of a blend of Tasmanian hops, London yeast and localized Coonawarra waters. Although it bears the Coonawarra name, it is brewed 700km away in Gippsland, Victoria.

The Lawrence Victor Winery has produced a cloudy amber ale. This has a distinct mineral aroma and flavour similar to some English ales that one can sample in a local county pub. On the palate are some sweet malts and subdued hops – a beer that tastes like a combination of English pale ale and pilsener.

Among other beer stocked and distributed by Jupiter Creek is the Bullant range, produced and brewed by Inchant Brewing of Western Australia.

Thomas Jecks Commonwealth Ale

This beer has been brewed with soft flora American hops and specialty grains, giving this nut brown brew a flavour of nutmeg and nutty malts. It is best served chilled to bring out the full bitterness.

Guilderford Porter Stout

This is a black, bittersweet stout and is close to the traditional English Imperial stouts of the past. It has a fresh aromatic nose with malt overtones, yet the scent of slightly burnt wood lingers. It has an evenly balanced palate where the bitter flavours don’t hide its fruit and citrus characteristics.

Bullant Bock Beer

This is a dark ale with a refreshing port wine aroma. It is flavoursome to the palate and gives a first and lasting impression of pleasant sweet candies with a clean well balanced finish.

Bullant Premium Mild Ale

With roast-like aromas, this ale’s spices filter through. To the palate is the pleasure of biscuits and fine malts. Bullant Premium Mild Ale has a clean finish of soft fruit flavours that last on the palate after the last sip.
