END-OF-SEASON EVENTS 2000
Through searing mid-30s heat, 15 club members with bikes braved the old Williamstown motocross track area last mid-November. Committee secretary, Greg Trickett, tried out his new KTM520. Other members and I had ridden the area in previous years - it consists of pine trees and one wooped-out section after another.
One had to ride in 20-minute bursts interspersed with long drink breaks. Matt Roy tried to beat the older Trickett on his new stead, while other members and I simply tried to combat the heat.
Poker run
Club elder statesman, Lester Martin, again organized the annual club Poker Run. About a dozen members gathered on the last Sunday morning in November at the Hackney Hotel car park before setting off to the foothills.
During the following three hours, they travelled through the Adelaide hills to the southern area of the freeway and back to the Hackney Hotel by lunchtime. The organizer had to refer to his trusty map on only one occasion. Otherwise in the slightly warm weather the event was a success.
Club AGM
The first Thursday in December last year was the clubs AGM. The existing committee was returned to office, except for Dave Roy who, with other commitments, could not continue as treasurer. Bernadette Reilly now fulfills a dual-role as social secretary and treasurer.
Toy run/Christmas barbecue
About 20 members joined 15,000 other motorcycle enthusiasts in the annual toy run that took off from Anzac Highway, Glenelg, last December. Most riders had toys strapped to their bikes and ventured up the freeway to the Hahndorf Oval.
The route was lined with spectators who provided a buzz for participating riders in the worthy cause. After unloading the toys at the oval and inspecting the latest bikes on offer, club members rode to the Echunga Oval for a barbecue lunch. After the food and some cricket, they rode back down the hill expecting to do it all again this year.
New calendar/events
Greg Trickett has developed an impressive calendar of events for 2001. They include dirt rides that take in trail rides, camp-aways and enduro events. Also booked is an interstate trail ride through the Alpine National Park in Victoria (26 and 29 October), which will be a once-in-a-lifetime chance to ride some of the best country in Australia.
The club will also host a round of the State Enduro Series at Dave Heinrichs Coonalpyn property on September 16. The next few months events include:
- Camp-away at Geranium (March 3, 4).
- Road ride, Delamere (March 25).
- Road ride, Barossa (April 7).
- Dirt ride, Monarto (April 21).
- Road ride, Mannum (May 6).
- Trail ride, Barossa (May 9).
- Camp-away, Coorong (May 19 - 21).
Also pending is the annual road ride to the World Superbikes at Phillip Island, Victoria (April 19 23). About 15 members with two cars are already booked to go via the Great Ocean Road. Three cabins in Cowes are booked, and the trip back will be though Halls Gap. For those interested, details are available from organizer, Bernadette Reilly.
Club t-shirts, caps and high-quality stickers are available for sale from Bernadette. Contact any committee member for event details.
