Caring colleagues

Dear Andy

I would like to thank a number of people from the Elizabeth LSA who have provided support to both my wife and myself during my wife’s recent serious illness and subsequent lengthy hospital stay.

First, Superintendent Milton Clark, who found time to offer constructive assistance, genuine concern and regular updates on my wife’s condition with follow-up telephone calls to me at home. Second, Senior Sergeant Don Barrett, who arranged annual leave for me at extremely short notice. Third, my patrol sergeant, Mark Feckner, who organized flowers, get-well cards, and took the time to visit us at home on a number of occasions after my wife was discharged from hospital.

Finally, my fellow team 3 members, who signed cards, visited and supported us in a number of ways. I must also thank the many other members of the Elizabeth LSA who have expressed their concern and support during what proved to be a very difficult period.

Yours sincerely

Good-natured police

Dear Andy

I must agree with you (Police Journal Editorial, February 2001) by putting in my two cents’ worth re the police attendance at sporting events etc.

Normally, we have a fairly good police presence here but, naturally, the existing complement was not sufficient for the annual Tour Down Under, Victor Harbor stage.

Each year sees more and more visitors coming from interstate, overseas and from other places in South Australia – it is decidedly obvious that the locals have seen the increased interest by the influx to the town.

The police were, at all times, good natured, cheerful and displayed their best, whether it was for traffic control, or just to return a wave when the crowds lining the roads shouted out to them.

I would also like to voice my approval of the police involvement on our local community radio station, 5EFM, where I spend three days as a volunteer.

These officers come on air once a week and give us police news, any updates, any friendly advice as to crime prevention, and guidance regarding safety etc. This is called “Policebiz”.

I firmly believe that these public relations exercises and involvement with the local residents can only establish a more friendly co-operation between organizations.

For what it is worth SAPOL, you do a great job with limited resources and facilities – there are those out here who do appreciate what you do.

Points made objectively

Dear Editor

I write to express appreciation of the constructive letter by Tim Tollenaar (Training Deficient, Police Journal, February 2001).

I hope the points raised in such an objective and unemotional manner by Mr Tollenaar get the serious attention that they deserve both from SAPOL management and from other serving officers.

Mr Tollenaar draws attention to a lack of training in “empty-hand tactics” and a failure to refresh hands on techniques. I would be most interested to hear the views of other members on these issues.

Congratulations to you as editor for printing the letter. I hope the Police Journal thrives as a forum for constructive feedback of this type. This forum to discuss the best operation of the Force is a powerful resource available to your members.

May I take this opportunity to wish all readers a happy, safe and prosperous New Year (Millennium)! By the way it has not gone unnoticed that there is a move for a 12% pay rise. Good luck!

PS: my e-mail address (ian.gilfillan@democrats.org.au) is a quick way for SAPOL members to communicate with me.

Yours sincerely
