Police Association secretary
Please accept my resignation due to invalidity as of October 2000.
Further, I wish to express my sincere appreciation to the association throughout the years I have had the privilege of being a member of this fine organization.
To Peter Alexander, Andrew Dunn and Trevor Haskell I say thank you for your support, care and assistance, which has allowed me to retire from SAPOL due to my ongoing health problems, and for the financial assistance accorded to me.
To my friends I have known and worked alongside and they know whom they are cheers, good luck and keep smiling. It was a privilege to serve with you.
Watch your back as the enemy is within.
Yours sincerely

Dear Andy
Please accept my resignation as a Crime Command conference delegate, as well as my resignation from the Police Association of South Australia, effective Friday, December 8, 2000.
After nearly 24 years service to SAPOL I have succumbed to the call of a day-shift job which promises to be challenging and a test of all my policing, investigative and leadership skills, but will allow me more time to spend with my family. I have been successful in winning the senior investigators position at the new investigations unit - Department for Water Resources.
I thank Peter Alexander, Mark Carroll and the hardworking executive committee and staff for the tenacious manner in which they undertake industrial relations in the policing arena. Their efforts, whilst unnoticed by many are enjoyed by the membership, which prospers from the fruits of their commitment.
Policing in the new millennium offers many difficulties and challenges to be faced by members, and without the vigilance and dedication afforded all members by the staff of PASA, many a good officer would fall by the wayside, having yielded to these enormous pressures.
The association staff, delegates and dedicated members out in the branches are the true unsung heroes in providing a better lot for the working police officer. I am so fortunate to have been a part of this fine organization.
I especially thank Mark Carroll for his guidance and counsel in the vexing times I faced over the past six years, with numerous battles fought more against frustrating bureaucracy and red tape than anything else.
Policing is a most honourable and noble profession, and I am proud to have been associated with SAPOL and its members from many areas, which included metropolitan and city patrols, Crime Command members from numerous CIBs, Drug Task Force, Operational Safety Training Unit (IMOST) and Surveillance Section, especially over the past 14 years. Would I do it all over again, most certainly so.
It has been a substantial learning experience, which has given me the skills to move on and further my career both in management and investigational fields.
I wish you all the very best for the future, in policing and on the industrial front.
Regards
John Winkworth

Dear Peter and Andy
Please accept my resignation from the Police Association due to my retirement from SAPOL. My last day of service is December 15, 2000.
After nearly 40 years service in SAPOL and having achieved personal milestones in excess of my initial ambitions, I now look forward to spending time with my family and travelling throughout Australia with my wife.
I have served in uniform positions throughout my career working within the general duties areas and throughout that time I have made many friends.
Having spent most of my police career in the Adelaide and southern area with a break of 10 years at the police academy, I have met many SAPOL members, sworn and unsworn, and striven at all times to assist them when possible.
Throughout this time, I have been very supportive of the Police Association and the diligent appointed representatives of your organization. There have been times when there was the potential for conflict between SAPOL ideologies and association aims but through close consultation with Andy Dunn, Mark Carroll and/or Sean Richter and the members concerned, together we were able to satisfactorily achieve best results for all parties.
Peter Alexander is a fine representative for all SAPOL employees and always has been open to communication from concerned members and for this I pass on my personal thanks. His fight for better conditions and wages for SAPOL members has always been untiring and in the main successful. Well done.
I see many letters in The Last Shift that, at times, denigrate the police management. There are many senior members who genuinely believe that the backbone of the service delivery is the front line troops and who praise the work of the members involved and the support staff. There are times when, due to unexpected sickness and new staff to an area, patrol and station numbers fall below expected levels. This then causes reshuffling of team strengths and changes to rostering to cater for shortfalls.
But with all this, I believe the opportunity to undertake diverse roles within SAPOL (patrols, station, enquiries, specialists etc) coupled with the willingness of members to provide the service delivery expected by the public, SAPOL members are still the best in Australasia (if not the world).
I have noted that some members bitch about working conditions, unfair changes to rosters, lack of consultation, or ignorance of subjects raised at the workplace and can only support the Police Association in requesting members who are affected by these matters to communicate with them and report such issues.
SAPOL and the association working together with the policing community can achieve desired results.
Best wishes
Brenton Mart
Chief Inspector

Dear Peter
Please accept my resignation from the Police Association of SA effective December 20, 2000, this being my last day of service with SAPOL due to age retirement.
I thank you and your committee and past committee members for the outstanding effort that you have all put in for the betterment of the job both from a pay aspect and improved conditions.
However, from a SAPOL point of view there is still plenty of room for improvement. There are insufficient numbers to do the job properly and until this is addressed, I cant see things improving. The job of a police officer has become so much harder to do over the past 38-plus years. We are now more answerable than in the past and the public expects more from us as the years go by. They are much quicker to complain than they were previously and too many are prepared to listen to their complaints, many of which are trifling.
I decided a long time ago that when it came to writing this letter that I should not dwell on the negatives but finish on a positive note so I will. I thank all those members I have had the privilege of working with over the years, in the main they have been great workmates and I thank them for that. I will certainly miss them. I look forward to seeing and hearing from them from time to time. When I look back on past experiences, I can see that it has been a fantastic journey through life some would even call it an odyssey. I will never forget it
For those workmates who remain in the job, enjoy your trip.
Yours sincerely

Dear Sir
I would like to resign from the Police Association of SA, due to my retirement from the police service, effective December 23, 2000.
Increasingly, it seems members leaving the service take the opportunity to express their negative feelings toward the department. Certainly, the last two years or so, have been the most difficult I have experienced since joining the department almost 39 years ago. However, I would prefer to remember the previous 37 years I spent in the job which, on the whole were enjoyable, rather than the last two, of which I have not so fond memories. I would say that I fully endorse the sentiments expressed by Alan Langridge in his letter of resignation in a recent issue of the Police Journal. The greatest asset of the department is indeed its men and women and until it tries harder, it is going to continue to lose talented men and women in the fashion that I have seen over the last few years.
I thank the Police Association for the way it has looked after the interests of both myself and all other members of the association over the years during which I have been a member. I also thank the many men and women who have encouraged and supported me and shown me loyalty during my time in the job. It is your comradeship which has made the difficult times bearable and it is this quality above all other things that I will miss most.
I have not left the workforce. The Lord has been gracious and provided me with a job as a bursar at the Naracoorte Christian School and I look forward to my new job in which I feel that I can use my talents in a less stressful environment, and be appreciated for my efforts. To those friends I leave in the service, good luck, God bless and do not let the #!*&% get you down.
Yours faithfully

Dear Peter
Please accept my resignation from the Police Association effective January 10, 2001. I take more positives than negatives out of my time with SAPOL.
I thank all those I have served with (well, almost all) and especially at my last posting at Riverland LSA.
I especially thank Kym Rover and Graham Butt who probably extended my time in the job by three years.
The people I will miss, the job I wont.

The secretary
I hereby tender my resignation from the Police Association, my last day of service being January 12, 2001.
I leave to take up a position within the Department of Water Resources as an investigator. I do not leave disillusioned or frustrated; I leave for no other reason than to be in a position whereby I can combine three specific acquired skills, namely, investigations, intelligence, and prosecution to a job.
During my 11 years, I have worked metropolitan and country patrols, regional traffic, highway patrol, traffic intelligence and finally prosecution. For me, moving about enabled me to enjoy a range of vastly different work environments. I found this extremely satisfying, and during this time, I was blessed with having benefited from the guidance of five mentors. My mentors were not wannabes, they all talked the talk and walked the walk, and it was a privilege to learn from them. Without exception, all have had a significant influence on my professional and private development, to RIM, PGB, AZ, HWM and AJM, thanks so very much (you know who you are, as will those who know specifically where I was posted).
I still believe the job is a great job (I hear some laughs, as you say to yourself, Its easy for him to say, hes leaving). But I sincerely believe that it is. It is my opinion that moving about until you find an area in which you enjoy working, is vitally important, the first step to achieving this remains suck it and see, so I encourage people to move about until you find such a posting.
To all members, sworn and unsworn, for your friendship, support, assistance, and above all professionalism in what is a bloody difficult job, that 99 per cent of the population could never perform, nor even fully understand thank you one and all.
Goodbye, good luck and God bless.
