All of us are probably guilty of putting off today what can be done tomorrow. However, procrastination over some matters can make a major difference to the quality of life we may have and this is particularly the case as we reach retirement age.
START PLANNING NOW
The need to plan for the future and the advantages of doing so from early in our working lives has been a message widely promoted over the past few years. Those of us who have reached our 50s will vouch for the good sense of that message. However, when retirement seems a long way off there can seem no pressing need to think about it.
Perhaps knowing where and how to start can also be a factor but there are many avenues of assistance available. PCU Investment Services Pty Ltd, for instance, offers a free consultation to help you establish a plan of action based on your perception of your present and future needs. This, of course, can be reviewed and refined as your lifestyle changes but it is a very useful and practical first step.
ARE YOU STATIONED IN THE COUNTRY?
While putting together a workable savings plan is important, police officers who work in country stations and live in departmental housing have an additional reason for taking care of their future during their working lives. The time will eventually arrive when it will be necessary to find a family home. If this has not been planned for during the intervening years, it will put an enormous stress on the budget. It could mean that it is necessary to purchase a home from retirement funds.
One very practical way of avoiding this is to purchase an investment home that is rented to tenants for the duration of your country posting. The tenants rent either pays or helps offset the mortgage payments (and provides a potential tax benefit). Eventually the home is available to be used as the family home or collateral to finance the purchase of a more suitable home. Either way, it can be an excellent way of taking care of the future.
If you feel that the purchase of an investment home would be of benefit to you, information about investment home loans is readily available from the Police Credit Union either over the phone or by coming in to one of our branches.
