THE CHARM OF KELLERMEISTER

By Mark Altmann

With panoramic views of the Southern Barossa Ranges, Kellermeister Wines lies just outside the rural township of Lyndoch. Family-owned and founded by Ralph and Val Jones in 1979, its winery and cellar door sales building – constructed of mud bricks – exudes rustic charm.

Counter tops in the cellar door sales area are made of jarrah that was salvaged from the old road-bridge over the railway line at Rowland Flat. Oregon beams over the doorways were once part of the old Adelaide Steamship Company slipways at Port Adelaide, and oregon posts support the verandah.

Kellermeister winemaker, Trevor Jones, began his career at Bernkastel Wines in 1977. In 1979 he accepted a position as assistant winemaker at Kirrawirra Wines. In 1982 he was appointed winemaker, a role in which he remained until 1986.

He furthered his expertise with Tyrell’s Vineyards in the upper Hunter Valley, NSW, where he accepted a job as winemaker at the end of 1986.

Now with Kellermeister, Jones’ expertise has won him many wine-show awards. Of three trophies he was awarded at the 1993 Barossa Wine Show, one was for most outstanding Barossa Valley/Eden Valley dry red for his 1990 Cabernet Merlot. Jones’ most recent success came for best boutique Riesling awarded by Boutique Wines of Australia 2000.

Trevor Jones Size 0 Eden Valley Reisling

This genuine Riesling has its origins in the high-altitude vineyards of the Eden Valley in the Mount Lofty ranges. This is rugged terrain, where the vineyards thrive in harsh, cold conditions.

This white has a powerful nose of juicy grape and lime. It reveals a dash of spice with a delicate honeysuckle and jasmine perfume bouquet.

This is a fruit-driven wine, which gives the palate a delight with flavours reminiscent of lime citrus and fresh passionfruit. It has the characteristics of a long, dry yet crisp finish.

It would be an excellent accompaniment to barbecued barramundi.

RRP per bottle: $16

Trevor Jones 99 Grenache Merlot Cabernet Franc

This is a classic old bush – vine Grenache with added merlot and cabernet franc. This wine’s variety of blends gives it depth and power.

It has an appealing ripeness on the nose – a sort of blackcurrant jam with a violet-perfumed bouquet.

To the palate are nuances in the blend: ripe black cherry fruit with an overlay of dark chocolate. A little French oak with soft tannin gives complexity and ensures longevity in taste.

This wine is the perfect partner to pasta.

RRP per bottle: $16
