Third round of enterprise bargaining: the Police Association claim

The Police Association has made a claim with which it will negotiate for a new enterprise agreement. The previous agreement expired on November 18, 2000. A copy of the claim has been circulated to all association members.

The claim follows extensive consultation with the entire association membership. Through that consultation process, the association interacted with all branches, and meetings were held between PASA officials and members across the state. Delegates subsequently endorsed the claim at the PASA annual conference. The committee of management then ratified the claim.

The claim represents the whole of the association membership, irrespective of members’ ranks and functions.

It includes a 12 per cent salary increase for all ranks during the life of the two-year agreement, and seeks an overlapping incremental salary structure. It also seeks a review of all Police Officers Award conditions.

A provision for greater commitment to police training is included in the claim as well, as are specific rank and function initiatives, salary packaging, and work and family initiatives.

This claim reflects appropriate compensation for a membership that continues to perform its duties with insufficient staffing levels and without appropriate funding for resources. As a result, members have had to cope with additional workloads complicated by organizational change.

In light of these facts, the Police Association’s position is clear – there will be no “trade-off” of existing conditions of employment.

Achieving appropriate wages and conditions for South Australia’s police officers is vital. It cannot be overstated, and carries great importance for both members and the community they serve.

It will be achieved through community support and all members’ solidarity.
