MANHATTAN IS MY BEAT - Jeffery Deaver

(Coronet Paperback $18.50)

If your wish is for some new, quality reading material, treat yourself to anything written by the author of The Bone Collector, Jeffery Deaver. His latest offering, Manhattan Is My Beat, is particularly suited to lovers of crime novels.

Five feet, two inches of sick repartee, near purple hair, and poetic imagination, 20-year-old Rune hasn’t been in Manhattan for very long. But she’s crafty enough to have found a squatter’s paradise in an empty loft, and a video store job that feeds her passion for old movies. When Rune has to collect an unreturned tape from a regular customer, she stumbles upon a gruesome find. Mr Kelly has been shot to death and she’s certain the key to his demise is somewhere in the hazy black and white frames of his favourite movie.

When you look for Manhattan Is My Beat in the bookstore, search out another new Deaver release, Death of a Blue Movie Star.

THE HEARING - John Lescroart

(Headline Feature $27.50)

An equally impressive author, John Lescroart, is set to continue the success of previous novels, including the international bestseller Nothing But the Truth (Police Journal, August 2000).

Lieutenant Abraham Glitsky has lost his daughter twice over; she has never been told who her father is, and now she has been murdered. The only suspect is a homeless heroin addict, who Glitsky’s close friend, Dismas Hardy, agrees to defend - tempers are running high.

Unleashing the secrets behind Glitsky’s illegitimate daughter, Elaine - herself a respected lawyer - will unlock dark truths and see Glitsky fight for justice in a judicial system entrenched in political corruption.

COMMANDOS - John Parker

(Headline $49.95)

From the author of The Gurkas comes an in-depth investigation of the history and exploits of the hard men of the marines - the Commandos.

Rampant British raiding parties’ attacks on German troops and installations in the early stages of World War II brought about Hitler’s orders to annihilate all men operating against German troops in so-called Commando raids - even if they offered themselves as prisoners.

Such was the impact of Britain’s first-ever special forces - formed in June 1940 - after Winston Churchill asked his chiefs of staff to “propose me measures for a vigorous, enterprising and ceaseless offensive for the whole of the German-occupied coastline”.

It was the Commando units of the Royal Marines that carried on those traditions after the war, engaging in virtually every British military scenario from 1945 to the present day.

Theirs has been a relentless military journey, which is now recounted in this acclaimed John Parker series on British military activity. Bloody, fearful and controversial accounts are given in the words of the men who were there.

David Beckham - My World

(Hodder & Stoughton $49.95)

In last month’s review of Beckham - My World, we incorrectly named champion Manchester United player, David Beckham, as “Beckman”.

Nonetheless, Beckham - My World is a stunning photographic portrait of one of the most talented sportsmen in the world of soccer. This stylish hardcover book also includes autobiographical text and gives David Beckham fans a detailed look into his every-day life.

Beckham - My World will be a worthwhile addition to the memorabilia collection of any Manchester United fan.

For the opportunity to win a copy of Beckham - My World, put your details on the back of an envelope and send it to Beckham Comp, SA Police Journal (168).
