Schmaal Essays
Dear Andrew
I refer to your correspondence of 28 April 2000 and my conversation with yourself and Mr Peter Alexander concerning publication of Jean Schmaal essays.
In respect to your concerns regarding ownership of the collection of Jean Schmaal essays, the Society obtained written copyright from Jean prior to her death. There was certainly no intentional action by the Society to disregard or not acknowledge the previous involvement of the Police Association of South Australia with the publication of Jeans stories. If this has caused any concerns or embarrassment to the Police Association then I offer an apology.
As you are aware the Police Historical Society is a volunteer group who has the clear objective to preserve the proud history of policing in South Australia. The Society receives no formal grants or donations and relies on fund raising and good will to continue with its valuable work.
To that end the Society has maintained over a long period of time a special relationship with the Police Association and as President I am anxious for that to continue and expand.
To prevent any misunderstanding in the future I invite your Association to contact me personally so that we can resolve such issues at an early stage. In respect to the future publication of any Jean Schmaal essays I will ensure that the Police Association is appropriately acknowledged.
Yours sincerely
John White
Assistant Commissioner
PRESIDENT
