Bowls

by Peter Baehnk

Grange Round Robin

Four rinks of our club’s bowlers took part in the second annual “Sleeper” competition in mid-October. Teams from the Master Builders, Customs and the host club, Grange, also competed.

The Sleeper is a small piece of polished railway sleeper with a rail spike through it. Our team won it last season, but this year the Master Builders took the prize.

After the first round, our team was in third position (six points) behind the Master Builders (10 points) and Customs (12 points). We hit our straps during the second round and put on a further 14 points (to 20), but we were not able to bridge the gap behind the Master Builders, which also put on a further 14 points (to 24).

Despite another excellent effort which gained a further 14 points in the third round, we were not able gain sufficiently on the top team. The Master Builders ran out winners on 36 points and claimed the Sleeper.

Our team ran a close second on 34 points. Customs - despite a good start - finished third on 18 points, while Grange finished on eight points.

Players endured sporadic showers during the day and the greens were somewhat slow.

Opening Day

Cloud over the Modbury Bowling Club greens in the early morning of October 15 appeared to herald a terrible day. After a few showers, it seemed our club’s opening day would be indoors.

Shortly before proceedings, however, the clouds rolled away to reveal sunny skies. About 100 bowlers and friends gathered for the official opening by Commissioner Mal Hyde. He referred to recent changes in our constitution, which now allow all SAPOL employees, as well as interstate or overseas police service members - whether serving, retired or resigned - to join our club as full members.

As president, I introduced committee members before inviting the tournament director’s wife, Lyn Gregory, to roll the first jack and Mal Hyde to roll the first bowl.

Although the greens were still a little slow, the competition was close and keenly fought. A rink skippered by a Modbury bowler won the day. Close behind this rink was one skippered by associate member, Roy Howcroft (also from Modbury).

Emergency Services Day

Twenty players from the police, fire and ambulance services, as well as host club, Edwardstown, competed in an annual round robin competition to aid the McGuinness/McDermott Foundation in late October.

This second annual competition was blessed with bright sunlight and a light breeze. Competition was fierce on the medium-paced greens.

The police team won the trophy with 14 points (40 shots up), closely followed by Edwardstown on 14 points (35 shots up). The ambulance and fire services each finished on 10 points.

The first game-winning rink was skippered by Nick Zuvich (police), the second by John Hines (fire) and the third by Kevin Clayton (fire). Darryl Williams of Edwardstown skippered the competition’s overall winning rink.
