THE CHALLENGES OF ANOTHER YEAR
The Police Association can reflect, with some degree of satisfaction, on its efforts of the past 12 months. It has been a most challenging year, with staffing levels the biggest of all issues.
After the associations campaign, the Premiers Task Force identified:
- The need to recruit 113 additional police officers by June 30, 2001.
- The need to employ 27 additional non-sworn members.
Further, the Government pledged extra recruitment to transcend the number of employees lost through natural attrition. The staffing issue, however, will still require the associations best efforts to maintain sufficient police numbers.
The association looks to the new year with confidence, despite facing such challenges as enterprise bargaining agreement No. 3 and the training issue - all in a difficult industrial climate.
Again, the associations achievements over a calendar year have highlighted the importance of members collective efforts - irrespective of rank or role.
On behalf of the committee of management, secretary, staff, delegates and branch officials, I extend the compliments of the season to all members, their partners and families.
