SA POLICE MOTORCYCLE CLUB

by Jim Andrew, President

Coonalpyn Campaway

About 20 club members travelled to the Coonalpyn property in early August for the fantastic riding and great camping this place offers. The impressive turnout included representatives of the club’s major sponsor, Peter Stevens Motorcycles. They brought a demo XR650 for members to try out. This bike was actually returned to them in one piece. The weekend’s highlights were the huge jumps members attempted over one of the big hills, and some of the tumbles taken into loose sand.

Monarto Dirt Ride

About 12 members visited the Monarto property near Murray Bridge in September. It was my first opportunity to explore this property’s challenging tracks and try out the new dirt bike. Members were again joined by three Peter Stevens staffers who brought their new DR400s. Racing on the sand and hard tracks - as well as the tighter sections - was worth the drive to the property.

Mannum & Barossa Road Rides

Members dusted off their road bikes and met at the bottom of the freeway for a day’s ride through the hills in mid-September. In fair weather they ventured up to the hills and through to the Angaston area. After heading down the main hill and avoiding gravel on the road, members ended up at Mannum Bakery. The return trip was through Mt Torrens and back to the city via Chain of Ponds. This was a chance to get the road bikes out of the shed; and another road ride - from Salisbury to the Barossa - took place in early October.

Coorong Campaway

Dave Paxon and others visited the Coorong at the end of September. This is an annual campaway which offers some of the best riding available. Huge sandhills, long beaches and fishing are all situated close to this great camping area, which is a favourite with members and a great place to ride and relax.

Stickers

The club now has stickers - bearing its logo and sponsor - available to members.

World Supers

Dates for the 2001 World Supers at Phillip Island are now confirmed as April 21 and 22. Social secretary, Bernadette Reilly, has booked three cabins in Cowes, which is close to the track. Fifteen beds are available for members and bookings are going fast. Previous trips to the world supers have proved very popular and, with Australian riders featuring well in this year’s placings, next year should be no different.

Poker Run

The Poker Run - organized by Lester Martin - is scheduled for November 26, and the annual Toy Run will be held on December 10.
