Temporary Disability Pension |
|
|
|
If through illness or injury you become temporarily or permanently incapacitated for work within SAPOL and you have exhausted your sick leave entitlements you are eligible to make an application to the Police Superannuation Board for a temporary disability benefit from the Police Superannuation Scheme.
When considering an application for a temporary disability pension the Board must be satisfied, on the basis of the medical advice presented (treating and independent doctor/specialist), that you are incapacitated for work in your present position within SAPOL and there is no other position, within SAPOL, carrying a salary of at least 80 per cent of the salary of your present position, which could be made available to you.
A temporary disability pension is not payable if:
a) you have attained 55 years of age; or
b)you are entitled to a period of sick leave; or
c)you are entitled to weekly payments of workers compensation; or
d)you are on a period of recreation or long service leave.A temporary disability pension can be paid to you, on a fortnightly basis, for a period of up to 12 months, subject to periodical medical review and the approval of the Board. In certain circumstances the temporary disability pension can be extended for a further six months. A temporary disability pension can only be paid for a maximum of 18 months for the same incapacity. The payment of a temporary disability pension is designed to provide you with a period of rehabilitation/assessment, away from work, to establish whether your incapacity for work is temporary (you will be able to return to work after a period of time) or permanent (you may have to consider retirement, on the grounds of invalidity). You are not required to make superannuation contributions to the Scheme while in receipt of a disability pension and the payment of a disability pension does not reduce your future retirement benefits.
If you are a member of the Pension Scheme a disability pension is calculated on the basis of your age 60 entitlement and your fortnightly superannuation salary (based on highest rank and increment actually attained in a permanent position during your service) at the date of application. If you are a member of the Lump Sum Scheme a disability pension is calculated on the basis of two thirds of the fortnightly salary payable to you at the date of application.
