Worthy Of The Prize
Few candidates for the Police Officer of the Year Award could have been more deserving than Senior Constable Ian Drummond of Tea Tree Gully patrols. His work with child cancer sufferers - as well as Blue Light and local schools - is by now well known.
Like most cops of his type, he had sought neither rewards nor recognition for his charitable works, and was humbled to receive such a prize. But his efforts transcend that which would be expected of the most dedicated of police.
Like his colleagues, he endures an occupation brimming with stress, violence and intense scrutiny. Then, away from work and of his own choosing, he visits sick children, supervises Blue Light functions and opens himself to the enquiring minds of school students.
And much of his philanthropic endeavour comes at a financial cost. Interstate travel for Bluey Day events, for example, is paid for by participants.
Nonetheless, Drummond is undeterred. His comments in Ever the Caring Cop leave no doubt that many are yet to benefit from his ingrained selflessness.
The Police Journal congratulates him on his compassion, dedication and achievements.
Not Easily Replaced
Senior Sergeant Elke Pfaus time in policing has been characterized by determination, good humour and unceasing support for fellow-cops.
During the difficult times as Police Association Womens Branch president, she soldiered on in pursuit of outcomes she believed to be in the majoritys best interests.
Now, as she closes the door on her 30-year career, she takes with her a wealth of local, national and international experience of the police industry. Her loss to SAPOL - acknowledged by Assistant Commissioner John White in Policings Best-Travelled Retiree - will be significant and not easily covered.
But for her 30 years invaluable input, she deserves a long, fulfilling retirement. The Police Journal wishes her well.
Service Recognized
The Police Association of SA held its annual Retiring Members Dinner at the Hilton Hotel on June 30. It recognized those police who had retired from SAPOL during the 12 months to June 30 this year. Those honoured had collectively devoted hundreds of years service to SA policing.
This dinner remains the most significant public recognition of retired police officers service. The Police Journal will report on the event in an up-coming issue.
