Australian Police Bowling Association Annual Carnival

-

Last year’s singles plate winner, Ian Sanday of New South Wales, combined well with Jim Cranna in the pairs final against J. Brereton and T. Brogan in an all New South Wales final.

After a loss in the second round of last year’s pairs championship, Bob Heffernan of New South Wales changed partners (J. Cranna to C. Parkinson), lost his first game against Bernie Hett of Western Australia and then won the pairs plate final against Victoria’s G. Stone and A. Campbell.

In the triples competition, all of our local contenders, except one, were knocked out leading up to the semi-finals. The rinks of Bob Peters, Bob Lodge and Danny Fitzgerald managed to reach the third round. In the fourth round, the rink of Howard Herde played off and lost against the rink of Bob Lee, the eventual winner of the championship over the rink of Western Australia’s D. Grant.

Bob Heffernan also featured in the final of the fours championship when he skippered a four against the rink of John O’Connell of New South Wales, the eventual winner. This was the fifth time that John had won the fours. Each time, John Brereton has been his “third”, and for the last four wins, Kevan Crossingham has been his “second”.

The local fours of Lindsay Yeo, Howard Herde and Rex Heins were unsuccessful. Lindsay Yeo was eliminated in the first round but then won the fours plate final. Howard Herde’s rink was eliminated in the second round when it played off against the rink of Rex Heins (luck of the draw). Rex then lost to the competition’s eventual runner-up, Bob Heffernan.

Next Year’s Carnival

St John’s Park Club in Sydney (Police Journal, January 2000) is the venue for the next carnival. It is due to run from April 1 to 8, 2001. This event provides a week of bowling, a holiday and lots of socializing.

The club is still looking for new members. One wonders what has happened to female bowlers. The club wishes to hear from them. They are, after all, entitled to apply for membership. It may not be long before women take part in the Australian police carnivals alongside the men.

CORRECTION: Victoria’s Noel Blake won the singles championship in Perth last year and not the singles plate as reported last month. After relegation to the plate competition this year (no disgrace), he played his first game against the eventual plate winner, Roger Ford of New South Wales.
