AT THE CINEMA
ANGELAS ASHES
Directed by Alan Parker and based on the popular Frank McCourt memoir, Angleas Ashes is the story of a struggling Irish family in the 1930s.
Seen through the eyes of a young McCourt, the family scratches out an existence in the slums of Limerick. McCourts mother has no money to feed her four children, as their father, Malachy, rarely works, and when he does he drinks his wages.
Angelas Ashes is graphically shot in one of the most impoverished places imaginable. The photography and direction are outstanding. It is a must-see film. Angelas Ashes opened in May and is rated M.
MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 2
The sequel to Mission Impossible, M:I-2 opened earlier this month. Trailing at many other cinema releases, M:I-2 appears to deliver the goods - in fact more goods than the first release.
This movie is claimed to be different from the first. Says the films co-producer, Paula Wagner: This is a more personal story. We get to see a more romantic side to Ethan Hunt within the framework of an exciting action drama. Bringing the movie into the new millennium was a challenge for director John Woo. We used a lot of computer specialists to help us find a high-tech design that would give the film an exciting new look.
ROMEO MUST DIE
From the producer of The Matrix, Romeo Must Die promised to deliver even more action - but it didnt. In fact, the 120 minutes would be better spent elsewhere. Theres a real chance that Romeo Must Die may have passed on before you read this review.
SAMPLE PEOPLE
The latest movie release to feature Australias Kylie Minogue opened last month. In the film, which focuses on the drug scene, Kylie plays what may be her toughest role so far. Although set in Sydney, Sample People was shot in Adelaide. Its an example of a top-notch film at a budget price, and is a little on the alternative side.
THE FLINTSTONES in VIVA ROCK VEGAS
The original movie The Flintstones was released in 1994 and grossed more than $350million worldwide at the box office. More for the fun than action, this sequel stars Mark Addy (The Full Monty) as Fred and Stephen Baldwin (The Usual Suspects) as Barnie.
Also in The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas are Kristen Johnston (3rd Rock), who plays Wilma, Jane Krakowsi as Betty, and Joan Collins as Freds mother-in-law.
ON THE GIANT SCREEN
Two new releases at the IMAX include Dolphins and Alaska - Spirit of the Wild. Like all previous IMAX releases, these two movies will satisfy all but the most critical viewers.
Dolphins follows a group of marine biologists as they research wild dolphins communication. From rarely seen fish herding behaviour to a close-up look at complex communication activities, Dolphins provides audiences a fascinating perspective and explores the amazing dolphin-human bond. It will intrigue all - from the young to the elderly.
In the vast reaches of Alaska, the great Ice Age still endures, and in Alaska - Spirit of the Wild, its true grandeur is captured in wonderful IMAX style. Narrated by Charlton Heston, the film is a story of survival, where life battles against fierce conditions and challenges. If there could be one criticism of this movie, or any IMAX geographical film, its the seed that it plants in all audiences - the desire to travel the world and view its real splendour.
For the opportunity to win this months movie prizes put your details on the back of a used envelope and address it to Movie Comp, SA Police Journal (168).
