INCREASED POLICE NUMBERS
The recent announcement of additional funding for the recruitment of 113 extra police officers is good news.
It follows an extensive Police Association campaign, which enjoyed strong community support.
The government has given a commitment to recruit the 113 additional officers by June 30, 2001. An additional 27 non-sworn members will also be employed.
The extra recruitment will transcend natural attrition - death, resignation and retirement.
The Premier's Task Force identified such needs as:
- Additional numbers for local service areas.
- The establishment of a relieving pool for metropolitan and country South Australia.
The additional numbers will make it possible to accommodate these needs.
At a time when crime rates have risen and police numbers have fallen, this recruitment is an important result. I thank all those involved in the campaign.
