Delamere Road Ride
A dozen club members met at Cumberland Park before taking a road ride towards Hindmarsh Island along the great roads south of Adelaide, including the infamous Delamere section, in mid-March.
With long sweepers through beautiful countryside, Delamere is one of the best sections of road for road bikes. The group eventually reached Hindmarsh Island and met up with other members, including resident club chef, Bernadette, who took charge of the barbecue lunch. Matt Nairne and Ann hosted club members at their shack, which overlooks the waterways.
World 500cc Motocross Titles
Later in March, Bernadette, Cameron, the Schaches and I visited Broadford, Victoria to watch the World 500cc Motocross titles. This was the first time the championship had been hosted in the Southern Hemisphere.
With Lyn and Sue Dunstan we checked out the layout of the track. I also checked out all the machinery in the pits and took the usual video footage. The $60,000-plus bikes on show were amazing.
We stood back during qualifying and watched the best in the world tear up the track. These guys were so fast and certainly knew their stuff. Lyn, Sue and I volunteered to help out the event organizers for the weekend, so we got to see the bikes and meet the riders.
The Belgian ex-world champion, Joel Smets, won both 45-minute motos, but it was gratifying to see two Australians give him a push in the first race. It was well worth the drive over, and another club trip is planned for next year. This will take in the World 125cc and 250cc championships.
Karoonda Dirt Ride
A club camp-away was held at the new property near Karoonda in early April. This property consists of about 1,800 hectares of sand tracks and scrub. My tribe - along with about another dozen members - attended and explored the new area. This place has huge potential and we only had time to check out about a tenth of the land.
Coonalpyn Easter Weekend
The Easter break was a good opportunity for members to venture to one of the clubs favourite camp-away and dirt riding areas. Coonalpyn is also the property to be used for the club to host a round of the States Enduro rounds on Sunday, August 6. As always, members had a great time, staying in the shearers quarters and riding on the awesome tracks in and around the property.
New Members
The club membership continues to grow, particularly through the participation of recruits from the academy who are keen to get out and ride with the club. The club welcomes enquires from anyone interested in both road and dirt motorcycling.
