Mixed Pairs Day

-

This season’s mixed pairs day was held at Hahndorf in February. For the 20 couples who played three games of 10 ends on greens that were reasonably quick, the day started at 10am. For some of the uninitiated, however, things were a little tricky with a fluky breeze.

After the first game and lunch, a draw determined the match-up of pairs for the second game. Every male bowler had a different female bowler matched with him for that game. The results were interesting, given that some of the couples had not played together before.

The third was played with the original partner. Prizes were presented and each of the ladies received a beautifully presented carnation.

The games were played in good spirit and results were close.

Club Challenge

The club attended the Modbury Bowling Club in late February to hone its skill level for the national carnival this month. Five police rinks challenged rinks from the 1 Red and 1 White Saturday pennant sides. Three of the police rinks played together in the carnival.

Although a couple of the club’s rinks were down on strength because of the absence of a couple of players, it still acquitted itself well.

After 21 ends, the result (with the exception of one rink) was very close. A-rink - skippered by H. Herde - won by one shot (25/24) against the rink of 1 Red (skipper G. McMahon).

The rinks of L. Yeo and D. Fitzgerald lost by three and two shots respectively. The rinks skippered by N. Zuvich and R. Allen lost by 11 and 17 respectively.

The greens were excellent and a real credit to the greenkeeper. The competition certainly helped with preparation for the carnival.

Mixed Fours Day

Mixed fours days are always popular, which was certainly the case at Payneham Bowling Club in early March.

Twenty-eight rinks - comprising 13 police rinks and 15 local rinks - played two games (11 ends and 12 ends) on well prepared greens. The weather was excellent, with a cooling breeze blowing which sometimes made the game a little tricky. But the temperature hovered around 30 degrees.

A-rink, skippered by N. Zuvich, took the prize for the day, having won its two games.

Men’s Fours

A 7:30pm start under lights on the couch greens at the Glenelg Bowling Club was an event to which a number of club bowlers were unaccustomed when they visited there in early March.

Five of our rinks were matched up against five of theirs. The greens were a little slow and “held” but we managed to find our way to a very comfortable win over the local side. The weather conditions were perfect: a clear starry sky with a temperature around 20 degrees all night.

The club still has an active membership of 80 bowlers. One of those, 92-year-old Arnold Forbes, is still going strong.

National Police Bowling Carnival 2000

Unfortunately, J. McKnight could not take leave for the carnival and had to drop out. His place has been taken by R. Heins. Reports on the carnival will appear in future issues of the Police Journal.
