Membership and Its Benefits
I recently received the lists of retired police officers from the Superannuation Fund and the Retired Police Officers Association. I found that, although most retired members had joined the RPOA in the past, there were many retirees who had not. They were, however, still recorded on a separate list by the Superannuation Fund.
I also found that many recent retirees who have taken a lump sum were not recorded on either list.
As RPOA president, I receive many phone enquiries from people trying to trace retired police officer friends. I am usually able to help by supplying a contact. But Im unable to supply this information if retired police neither register with the RPOA nor remain in the pension fund.
When checking both lists I searched for names of recently-retired police officers, but by virtue of taking the lump sum there was no record.
I appeal to all retired officers to join the RPOA. It costs only $13 per year, or 50 cents per fortnight out of ones pension.
RPOA members are entitled to attend the annual dinner, from which a percentage of proceeds is paid by the RPOA for the annual picnic at Fort Largs, which is free to members. Throughout the year the committee organizes three or four bus trips which the RPOA subsidizes.
Retired police officers who join the RPOA become full members while their spouses become associate members. If the actual member predeceases, however, his or her partner may apply for full membership.
The RPOA meets on the first Thursday of every month at 2pm for around two-and-a-half hours in Fenwick Hall, first floor, PASA building.
From right on 2pm there is a very short business meeting with information concerning club activities, followed by either entertainment or a speaker. At about 3:15pm a delicious afternoon tea is served by our womens auxiliary. All members are asked to either bring a plate or pay $2 toward costs. The womens auxiliary has a roster system and asks those able to help serve afternoon tea once a year.
Most of our present members are near their seventies. At present, we have two members aged in their nineties. We would like younger members to carry on this club. I urge all retired police officers to join the RPOA to maintain the membership and retain the RPOA for many years to come.
