BI-ANNUAL SHIELD COMPETITION
![]()
Five rinks skippered by A. Martin, J. Minnigal, H. Herde, L. Yeo and N. Zuvich played West Croydon and Kilkenny RSL in the traditional, bi-annual shield competition.
The greens were reasonably quick and the atmosphere friendly.
Our side eventually defeated the local side (87 shots to 50) with four rinks up and one down. The rinks of J. Minnigal (15/13), H. Herde (14/9) and L. Yeo (21/6) were our winners, with the rink of N. Zuvich (Powell, Wallace and Doering) being the overall winner (25 shots to nine). Our losing rink (A. Martin) fought a close battle to go down 12 shots to 13.
VALUED SUPPORTER
Funeral director and former SAPOL member, Greg ONeill, attended our opening day last October.
Mr ONeill provided substantial financial assistance to help run the event and has recently taken on membership of the Somerton Bowling Club.
We are grateful for his support and hope to enjoy a continuing association with him.
NATIONAL POLICE BOWLING CARNIVAL 2002
Discussion about the venue for the national carnival in Queensland is, one might say, a little premature.
We havent run our April 2000 carnival yet, but already know that the 2001 carnival will be held at St John Park, Sydney.
The 2002 carnival is expected to be held from April 14 to 20, 2002, at the Surfers Plaza Resort, Surfers Paradise.
The resort is actually 15 levels of high-rise, 13 levels of which consist of four-and-a-half-star, self-contained holiday apartments. A short walk takes one to the centre of Surfers Paradise entertainment and shopping.
The first two floors accommodate our hosts, the Surfers Paradise Bowls Club. Four professional greens - all with lights - are available on site.
Ample underground car parking is available, and the greens are only a short lift ride from ones unit. All functions - welcome dinner, State dinner and presentation dinner - can be held on the premises.
The normal tariffs are $79 per night (one bedroom) and $98 per night (two bedroom). The Queensland Police Bowls Club has, however, managed to negotiate a more reasonable rate for us. For example - $24.50/person/night in a two-bedroom suite.
The Queensland Police Bowls Club has advised us of their choice at this early stage as they are seeking expressions of support for the venue. Therefore, all bowlers can make use of this generous offer.
Further information regarding the facilities is available from your committee. The question of support for this project will be discussed by committee. We trust youll make your attitude known.
MEMBERSHIP
We are still looking for new members.
Our club singles competition has been cancelled again through lack of numbers. This is the second year in a row.
Our members come from all areas of SAPOL. Some are serving but many are retired.
The day is fast approaching when the club may be the SA Police Bowling Club in name only. We may have to go further afield to attract members. If youre a bowler, this is your chance to be part of a very active club.
