Bintang Mas

- Malaysian Delights

y partner and I needed an injection of Malaysian curry recently and set course for the Bintang Mas Restaurant at Magill. When making the booking we were told the restaurant was full and they could only find us a seat out on the veranda. We didn’t mind and knew we were in for something special, considering we were eating on a Tuesday night.

We were met at the door by the smiling attentive staff and shown to our table, which had a commanding view of Magill Road. The menu is extensive and contains a combination of traditional dishes like Nasi Goreng and Malaysian Satays, but also holds such delights as Snapper Head Curry. In my opinion there isn’t enough offal on menus these days, and I’m always in search of somewhere different to eat the often pre-sausaged bits of any beast.

My partner’s choice for entrée was spring rolls. My choice was oxtail soup spiced Malaysian style. We decided to have a bottle of the restaurant’s unlabelled Watervale Riesling. This wine was a touch sweet for my palate but came at a reasonable price and accompanied all the courses well. It also contrasted well with the intense spice flavours of the oxtail soup.

I took great pleasure in stripping every morsel of luscious sweet meat from the knuckles of the oxtail which swam in spicy juice. My partner looked on with a rye smile having seen me devour pigs’ trotters with the same relish. After licking the fingers I looked for the second course.

My partner chose an old favourite of Nasi Goreng for her main course. I chose Sotong Sumbat - squid stuffed with prawn and chicken. The Nasi Goreng had a strong smoky flavour, and I quite liked the little I tried.

My squid came smothered in traditional spicy Malaysian peanut sauce - the stuffing was delicious. Dishes involving stuffed squid are fraught with danger through the fine balance of cooking the stuffing and not over-cooking the squid, but this was a great dish which I really enjoyed.

The Bintang Mas Restaurant is a good place if you feel the need for a Malaysian curry. The prices are cheap and our two-course meal, bottle of house wine and a beer cost $40. The staff were always smiling and made my partner and I feel comfortable and well served.
